Aldgate Public Realm Strategy

The APRS develops a shared vision and practical framework to deliver an integrated public realm for Aldgate, a transitional zone between the City of London and the East End. GPA have produced the strategy in collaboration with Witherford Watson Mann Architects, for a client group led by Design for London.

The Aldgate area is undergoing substantial change through a large number of commercial developments, new public transport infrastructure, and the extension of the public realm as a result of the redesign of highways. The APRS brings together the existing policies and proposals to facilitate the creation of a common ground for the area’s diverse public, stitching together what had become a fractured streetscape. The report outlines a series of principles and next steps to deliver this vision of an inclusive public realm with a clear identity and sense of place.
